Proposed Topic in the form of an Essential Question: What type of influence does the media expose us to and how powerful is it?
Rationale for Choice
What about this topic appeals to you? Why did you choose it? An underground activity called free running has been exposed and exploited by the media resulting in several tv shows and numerous commercials. I feel it has been wrongly portrayed and does not justify the esscence of the movement. I want to see just how powerful an impact the media has on society and if its more of a brainwash than informative.
What do you already know about this subject? In todays society it is almost unavoidable in our everyday lives and influences everything from the clothes we wear to the usic we listen to.
What are you hoping to learn about the subject? The extent of the power the media has and how it uses this power.
What are you most interested in regarding the topic? I am interested to learn how to obtain and use the ability to influence others to my own self benefit.
What potential risks or challenges do you foresee for your project? I am worried about finding some sort of community service and how well the media has covered its tracks.
If you want to concentrate on the misrepresentation of freerunning (I had to look it up), you could shadow freerunners for a day, and ask their opinions on the media portrayal. Make certain that you stick to the legal freerunning, such as those who do not trespass or commit property crimes. You can also contact a local newstation to see if you might be able to watch a news show being filmed, and simply take notes on the process to get firsthand experience.
